Launch of Faith In Families

A wonderful day was enjoyed at the launch of ‘Faith in Families’ on Thursday, 29 January 2009, at St Barnabas’ Cathedral Hall, Nottingham. ‘Faith in Families’ (formerly the Catholic Children’s Society, Nottingham) is an Independent Charity providing adoption and adoption support services to children and families and social work services to children and families across the East Midlands.

Adoption Inspection 2008

The Society's Registration Inspection by OFSTED took place in September and the service was rated as outstanding by the Inspection Team. This is the highest possible rating and reflects the quality of work across the whole of the adoption service.

A summary of the Inspectors' findings is detailed below:-

The agency has a thorough and rigorous approach to the recruitment, preparation, assessment and approval of adopters. It is committed to supporting adoptive families both before and after the adoption order is made, through individual work, access to specialist advice, the provision of social events, support groups for adopters and children and training. It is also committed to supporting birth relatives and adopted adults through its counselling, access to records and intermediary services, which are responsive, sensitive and professional.

The management of the agency is outstanding at all levels. There are very good monitoring systems in place, the agency is responsive to any shortfalls which are identified and is constantly looking at how it can improve. Staff and managers are skilled, knowledgeable, experienced and enabled to undertake their duties through good support, supervision and training.

Steve Hargrave, Chief Executive, said, "This is an excellent outcome for the agency and reflects the skill and commitment of the whole staff team who strive to produce the highest quality services for the children and families with whom we work. It provides a good basis for the agency to move forward in developing a new range of services as well as continuing to improve our adoption service. I would like to thank all those who contribute to our work, including our team of volunteers and people who support us through fundraising and donations. The successful outcome of the Inspection is a direct result of everyone's contribution, no matter how small"

This year the Catholic Childrens Society celebrates its Diamond Jubilee. Over the past 60 years we have found new families for over two thousand children, yet we know that the need is still great. There are too many children throughout the country who are still waiting to experience the love and stability of a happy and safe family life.

We are therefore always pleased to hear from any family who would like to know more about adoption.

To mark the Diamond Jubilee, The Society is launching a number of new services to help and support children and families:-

  • We are working with colleagues at MacMillan Care and Family Care to provide emotional support for children and young people who have been bereaved
  • We are running new therapeutic support groups for adopted children
  • A new school social work service provides support to students who may be experiencing a wide range of difficulties and problems in their lives
