Adopters Own Stories

Prospective adoptive parents, Philip and Sarah

Hi. We are Philip and Sarah and we live in a Victorian house that we share with our two cats. Sarah has two children by her first marriage who are grown up and lead independent lives. Unfortunately we are unable to have our own children, hence our decision to pursue adoption.

We would like a child to share our lives and bring up as our own. We are regular Church goers, share many values and have a similar outlook on life.

Sarah is of white British origin and works as a Pharmacy Assistant in a local Chemist. Philip was brought up in southern Europe and works as a Lecturer at a local University.

We both have a variety of interests, enjoying walking in the countryside, travelling abroad and to different parts of the UK. We spent a lot of time and energy decorating and improving our home and have become quite adept at DIY. We also enjoy gardening and love to relax in our garden during the summer months.

Prospective adoptive parents, Siobhan and Gregory

This is our family. My name is Siobhan, my husband is Gregory and Alexander is our eight year old son. I was born in Ireland and Gregory and Alexander were both born in the Midlands. We have been married for eighteen years and are best friends as well as husband and wife.

We have a large extended family and have lots of contact with our brothers, sisters, nephews and nieces.

We live in a small town in between two large Cities. We have a nice three bedroomed house with a garden back and front. Close by there is a swimming pool and two parks as well as good local shopping facilities. Gregory works as a telephone engineer, usually working a five day week but occasionally working on call at weekends. I work part-time as a lunchtime supervisor at Alexander’s school.

Alexander has been part of the discussions about our family adopting right from the start and is looking forward to a younger child becoming part of the family.

He has recently cleared out his bedroom to make sure there is enough drawer and cupboard space for a child to put their clothes and possessions.

Adoptive parents, Mary and James

We are Mary and James and have been married for five years, during which time our relationship has grown and has become stronger.

We adopted Joshua, 7, and Stacey aged 4 last year, and our lives have changed considerably since then. Our neighbours are all very kind and supportive and the local community gets on well together.

Joshua and Stacey have settled well and now have plenty of friends locally. Mary is white British, James is of African Caribbean origin and Joshua and Stacey are dual heritage (African Caribbean/White

We like socialising with our friends and family and this may involve meals at each others homes or trips to interesting places. Mary has one sister and two nieces and James is from a large family and has six brothers and sisters and nine nephews and nieces. Joshua and Stacey really enjoy being part of a large family.

James works as a Librarian and Mary currently works part-time as a Housing Officer. Since Joshua and Stacey were placed with us our activities have become much more home-based as we all enjoy swimming, going on outings and picnics and going to the cinema.

Single adoptive parent, Jenny

Hello! My name is Jenny and my daughter who I adopted 3 years ago is Chloe. We live near to the sea, and Chloe, who is 8, enjoys long walks along the beach at weekends.

I am single but have always wanted to be a parent and have found adopting Chloe to be rewarding but hard work. I work part-time as a secretary and can usually manage to work this around school hours as my employers are very flexible about working times.

My parents live about an hours drive away so they are able to help me out when I need a ‘babysitter’.

Chloe has a friend at school who was also adopted and they really enjoy being together.

During the time Chloe has been living with me I have seen her develop from being shy, awkward and distrustful into a much more self confident and happy girl. We enjoy the time we spend together and the activities we do, especially going camping in the summer.
