The Society’s Research and Development
Programme began in 1995, following a successful Application
for a Section 64 Grant from the Department of Health, which
funded ‘Project 16-18’.
The Project, the first of its kind, secured
the views of young adopted people about the range of adoption
services that they had received, and their suggestions for
improving those services.
Following
the overwhelming success of ‘Project 16-18’, which
resulted in two National Conferences and an International
Presentation, the Society further developed its Research and
Development Services through the establishment of ‘AQUO
– Adoption – A Quality Option’ again funded
by a Section 64 Grant Application from the Department of Health.
The AQUO project tested a model of consultancy between the
Voluntary and statutory sector with the aim of appraising
and improving the delivery of adoption services in the Statutory
Sector. This consultancy model, piloted over a two-year period,
produced significant training and practice resource material
which has been readily purchased by Local Authorities and
Voluntary Adoption Agencies throughout the United Kingdom,
USA and Canada.
The learning, change and development which
took place and benefited the participating Agencies, was highly
successful and the Government’s Adoption Task Force
commended the resources and tools that emanated from the Project.
The Society successfully applied to the Department of Health
for further funding up until 31 March 2002 to further develop
the resources, which form the basis of the Training and Consultancy
initiatives across the Statutory and Voluntary Sector to provide
assistance in achieving the National Adoption Standards.
